WHAT IS ECOPILE® FOUNDATION SYSTEM?
Ecopile® is an innovative, low-impact foundation system designed as a modern alternative to traditional concrete piles. It provides high structural strength, instant load-bearing capacity, and rapid installation, making it ideal for our tiny homes, transportable homes, cabins, and residential builds.
Unlike concrete foundations, Ecopile® foundations are installed without excavation, without concrete, and without heavy machinery, significantly reducing site disruption, installation time, and overall project costs.
The Ecopile® system is engineered to work with the natural ground conditions rather than against them, making it an environmentally responsible foundation solution suitable for both urban and remote sites.
Ecopile® foundations are 100% reusable and 100% recyclable, offering one of the lowest carbon footprints when compared to traditional screw piles and conventional concrete piling systems that rely on heavy machinery.
Each Ecopile® can be installed in under five minutes per pile and provides instant load-bearing capacity, allowing construction to continue immediately with no waiting time for concrete curing or drying.
Installation is completed using hand-held tools, eliminating the need for heavy machinery or specialist operators. This results in fewer people on site, a safer working environment, and a cleaner site compared to conventional concrete foundations.
Because no concrete is used, pre-pour council inspections are not required, reducing delays and simplifying the consent process. Ecopile® foundations can be installed in all weather conditions and across a wide range of ground conditions, from soft sand through to hard ground and rock.
The combination of speed, simplicity, minimal site disruption, and instant strength delivers significant time and cost savings while maintaining excellent structural performance.

HOW ECOPILE® FOUNDATIONS WORK
All Footprint Homes are engineered to be compatible with both Ecopile® foundations and conventional concrete piling systems.
Ecopile® foundations are based on proven engineering principles inspired by the root structure of trees. The system combines:
- Shallow foundation bearing capacity
- Deep foundation skin friction
- Toe resistance for uplift and lateral loads
This hybrid approach allows Ecopile® piles to efficiently transfer loads into the ground while maintaining excellent resistance to compression, uplift, lateral forces, and bending moments.
Once installed, Ecopile® piles provide instant holding strength, allowing construction to continue immediately, no curing time required.

ALL FOOTPRINT HOMES DESIGNED FOR ECOPILE® FOUNDATIONS
All Footprint Homes designs are engineered from the outset to be fully compatible with Ecopile® foundation systems.
Our homes are designed with appropriate pile layouts, load paths, bearer spacing, and bracing solutions to ensure seamless integration with Ecopile® piles. This allows our clients to take full advantage of the speed, strength, and low-impact benefits of Ecopile® foundations without compromising on structural performance or compliance.
By designing specifically for Ecopile® foundations, we are able to:
- Streamline engineering and foundation design
- Reduce site works and installation time
- Minimise ground disturbance and environmental impact
- Ensure compatibility with NZ building and engineering requirements
This approach means your Footprint Home can be installed on Ecopile® foundations with confidence, whether your project is located in a rural, coastal, sloping, or hard-to-access site.
FOUNDATION OPTIONS – ECOPILE® OR CONVENTIONAL PILES
All Footprint Homes are designed to be compatible with both Ecopile® foundation systems and conventional concrete piling systems.
This gives our clients flexibility to choose the foundation solution that best suits their site conditions, council requirements, engineering advice, and personal preference.
Where Ecopile® foundations are selected, they offer a faster, cleaner, and more efficient alternative to traditional concrete piles, with minimal ground disturbance and instant load-bearing capacity. Conventional concrete piles remain a suitable option where required or preferred.
By designing our homes to work with both foundation systems, Footprint Homes ensures:
- Greater flexibility across different site conditions
- Compatibility with council and engineering requirements
- Smarter solutions for transportable, onsite, and off-grid builds
